Course Description:
This course examines the art history of the United States within the broader context of the Americas, recognizing the land's indigenous origins and colonial histories. Students will critically explore the interplay between native and colonial cultural expressions through artistic practices, employing analytical frameworks that consider race, gender, and socio-political structures. The curriculum covers the development of American artistic heritage, tracing the evolution of artistic identities and national characteristics from Native American, European, and colonial origins to contemporary times. The course also includes significant influences from Asian, African, and Latin American art traditions, providing a comprehensive understanding of the diverse artistic landscape of the United States.
