Week 12, November 25

Topic: American Abstraction

Readings (Before Class, Posted on Manifold):

  • Abstract Expressionism: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/abex/hd_abex.htm by Paul Stella
  • Lee Krasner: Untitled: https://smarthistory.org/hartley-officer/ by Dr. Thomas Folland

Assignments:

  • Annotation Reading Response on Manifold, Due Date: Friday November 29th

This week, I'd like you to do an activity and then write a reflection:

Create Your Own Abstract Expressionist Artwork:

  • Using any medium you have available (paint, markers, digital tools, etc.), create an abstract expressionist artwork inspired by the techniques and philosophies discussed in the readings.
  • Focus on expressing emotions, ideas, or movements rather than creating a representational image. Experiment with color, form, and composition.
  • Title Your Artwork: Give your artwork a title that reflects its emotional or conceptual essence.

Reflection:

Write a brief reflection (150 words) on your experience creating your abstract expressionist artwork. In your reflection, address one of more of the following questions:

  1. Creative Process: Describe your creative process and the choices you made in terms of color, form, and composition. How did these choices help you express your emotions or ideas?
  2. Connection to Readings: How did the readings on Abstract Expressionism and Lee Krasner influence your approach to creating your artwork? Provide specific examples from the readings that inspired your work.
  3. Personal Insight: What did you learn about abstract expressionism and yourself through this activity? How did it feel to create art that focuses more on expression than representation?
