Introduction
Although we educate students to prepare them for their future careers, we do not explicitly discuss what the environment of the workforce entails. The image of a workforce may change depending on several variables such as ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic class.
In New York City, Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial group. According to the Census, from 2010 to 2020 the overall population of the United States had a 36.1% increase of Asians. As a result, more AAPI individuals enter the workforce. However, there is a disparity in workplace power dynamics and leadership gaps.
We see this more frequently with those who identify as Asian women.
This lesson will explore the historical circumstances of our current issues and other factors that play into marginalizing Asian women particularly.
Learning Objectives:
- Understanding the relation between gender and race
- Highlighting the power imbalance in work culture regarding AAPI
- Connecting historical circumstances and current issues
