Since then, the Language Movement of 1952, February 21 has been celebrated as the Martyrs' Day of the Bengalis every year. Since the creation of Bangladesh, the President, Prime Minister and people from all walks of life paid floral tributes to the language martyrs at the Central Shaheed Minar at 12:01 am on February 21. The songs of Prabhat Feri and Prabhat Feri have become an integral part of Bengali culture. After the independence of Bangladesh, Ekushey February was declared a public holiday. On this day, the process of nurturing Bengali consciousness was continued through organizing various programs highlighting the significance of Shaheed Day.


On February 21, 1952, the Bengali nation protected the dignity of the mother tongue in exchange for blood. Ekushey February was declared as 'International Mother Language Day' at the UNESCO session in Paris on November 17, 1999 and the song "Ekushey Gaan" (painted by my brother blood) is now sung in 12 languages. Since February 21, 2000, the day has been celebrated in the membering states of the United Nations and the Language Movement of Bangladesh was awarded international status. In Bangladesh, small ethnic groups have different languages and cultures. Various steps have been taken to respect and preserve the language and culture of this small ethnic group. After the independence of Bangladesh, Ekushey February was declared as a public holiday, where radio, television and cultural organizations assmebled various programs highlighting the significance of the day. Currently, this International Mother Language Day is also celebrated in many schools and educational institutions of India.
