Beyond Passive Learning: Developing Study Techniques for Mastery and College Readiness

Bio

I am a first-year psychology PhD student at the Graduate Center and a graduate assistant at Queens College. I previously earned my BA in psychology and computer science from College of the Holy Cross in 2024, and then worked as a research assistant at Brown University's Virtual Environment Navigation Lab. My current academic interests lie in cognition and emotion.

Course Setting

I teach General Psychology at Queens College through the College Now program. My students have a diverse set of interests and cross-disciplinary academic goals.


Problem of Practice

When I entered college in 2020, I was blindsided by the realization that I did not know how to study properly. The expectations were higher, and I had to quickly learn how to keep up. Since then, I have observed a significant gap between early college-level material and the high school material to which many students are accustomed. Many of my students learn concepts at a surface level but do not demonstrate true mastery. I believe this problem arises from undisciplined and uninformed study methods. This deficiency will undoubtedly affect their success once they enter college; we cannot simply reduce the difficulty. Instead, I propose that the solution lies in mindful reflection on effective study techniques.

How might I help students adopt data-driven study techniques to learn how to acquire mastery at the college level?

Strategy

To address the challenge of students relying on surface-level knowledge and ineffective study habits—preventing true mastery—I plan to implement a two-part strategy containing post-class reflections and post-exam reflections.

The post-class reflections will take place at the end of each class. I will ask students to verbally share their feedback about the material that day through prompts such as “What are your takeaways from this class?” The post-exam reflections will prompt students to consider their performance and identify gaps in their learning, through questions like “How did you study for this exam? Which strategies were effective or ineffective?” and “What adjustments will you make for the next exam?”

Instead of studying on “autopilot,” the post-exam reflections encourage students to gain awareness of their learning process and correct their methods. The post-class reflections reinforce this component by asking them to practice mindfulness and addressing possible gaps in understanding before they emerge during an exam.

This will impact student performance by creating agency in one’s own success: encouraging engagement with the material and conscious awareness of one’s actions. Over time, I expect to see more depth in understanding, higher exam scores, and stronger personal connections to the content.

Analysis

After analyzing the post-exam reflection data, I found an overall decline in scores from Exam 1 to Exam 2 across both groups, which may be attributed to relative exam difficulty. The control group (n = 4) showed a larger average decrease (-28) than the intervention group (n = 7; -15.4). The intervention group had a lower average score for Exam 1, but maintained performance better than the control group.

Accounting for baseline differences using an ANCOVA model, the intervention group had higher adjusted Exam 2 scores (47.5) than the control group (34.3), but the difference was nonsignificant. Likewise, the linear mixed model showed a significant overall decline but no significant interaction effects. The data suggest that while the intervention may have mitigated the performance drop, we cannot conclude a clear effect due to the quasi-experimental design, small sample, and nonsignificant differences.

A qualitative analysis of student responses from the reflection assignment reveals several patterns. Students generally felt more prepared for multiple-choice questions than written-response questions. They overwhelmingly relied on cramming and indicated minimal engagement with the material outside of class, as reflected in their surface-level understanding of concepts. They were largely unsatisfied with their performances, citing low motivation and poor time management as obstacles. Students demonstrated awareness of many data-driven strategies—active recall, attending review sessions, and asking for help—suggesting that they were missing motivational and self-regulatory components.

While the data is inconclusive, and the exam score trend is not especially promising, the intervention may have been effective for creating awareness and mindfulness, as intended. There are, unfortunately, additional unforeseen obstacles. For the students who still have the time and desire to learn, the solution may lie in multifaceted development beyond the classroom.

Recommendation

I would encourage other educators to adopt strategies that promote metacognition. Just as students must dedicate time to learning, it is equally important that they discover how they learn best. Promptly capitalizing on failure promotes future success. However, awareness is only one component of the complex educational experience. This strategy does not sufficiently increase motivation, nor alleviate the time conflict, emotional pressure, and cognitive load from other responsibilities. A more holistic strategy should incorporate multifaceted interventions.
