In this project, we will explore Bronx-based poet, educator, activist and performing artist María Teresa "Mariposa" Fernández poems.

Mariposa is an award-winning Afro-Puerto Rican poet and Letra's Boricua Mellon Fellow, performance artist, educator, and activist born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Mariposa's poetry, often blending Spanish and English, explores themes of empowerment, identity, and cultural pride. Her notable works include the chapbook "Born Bronxeña: Poems on Identity, Survival, Love & Freedom" and the widely acclaimed poem "Ode to the Diasporican." She has been featured on platforms such as HBO Latino's "Habla Ya!" and the documentary "Americanos: Latino Life in the U.S." Currently, Mariposa serves as a lecturer in the English department at Lehman College, and continues to inspire people through her performances and community engagement.

Project Overview

Mariposa's work has been world-renowned and informed the Puerto Rican diaspora's Identity with poems like Ode To Diasporican, and Women's Identity in Pussyology and Afterbirth.
