City College Archives and Special Collections

United Nations Collections: The UN Secretary-General Papers: Ban Ki-moon (2007-2016) collection, and the UN Secretary-General Papers: Kofi Annan (1997-2006) collection

These two collections were curated and made accessible online thanks to The Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership.

Ban Ki-moon was the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 2007 to 2016. Within this collection, there is a letter to then-President Barack Obama from Ban Ki-moon from 2011, after the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Kofi Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. As part of this collection, there is a photo of Kofi Annan visiting Ground Zero with then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, in addition to an official report of a meeting of the Security Council on the first anniversary and an official letter of support from S. Iqbal Riza.

City College Historical Information Collection

Within this collection, there is a sub-collection dedicated to 9/11, titled: City College Reaction to Event of Disaster on September 11, 2001. The materials in this sub-collection include a flag and frame realia, newspaper issues from The New York Daily News and The New York Post, as well as a September 11 Memorial Book.

John Johnson Collection

John Johnson is an alumnus of City College and had a long career as an award-winning news producer, correspondent, and anchor. The John Johnson Collection contains documents, photographs, audiovisual materials, and unique objects, such as a fireman’s helmet from 9/11.

Congressman Charles B. Rangel Archive

Congressman Charles B. Rangel held his position in the House of Representatives for 46 years, beginning in 1971 and retiring in 2016. The papers in this collection include documents about his personal life in Harlem, and materials pertaining to his professional life. In this collection, there are materials related to 9/11 in two places: the Staff Files series and the Testimonies series. In Staff Files, there are 11 folders within the Sheiner, Jon, 1995-2012 subseries: four folders about the attacks, one about the aftermath from the years 2003-2009, three binders about the 9/11 attacks from 2001, a folder about Federal Disaster Assistance related to 9/11 from 2003, a folder about the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009, and a folder containing materials related to the Liberty Zone Tax Benefits.

In the Testimonies subseries, there are testimonies given by Rangel. Within this series, the Testimony before the Council of the City of New York on the Issue of the Federal Government Providing Assistance to the City of New York in the Aftermath of 9/11, 2002-02-11 may be relevant to researchers.
