All waste and excess reagents should be disposed of in the labeled waste

container in the room.

Laboratory Activities

This week’s lab is designed to help you learn, demonstrate, and improve on your

UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy techniques.

Part One

Measure the absorbance spectrum of the standard solution of Red Dye Number

40 for wavelengths from 400 to 700 nm. Use the provided solution of known

concentration of Red Dye Number 40 to measure the absorbance spectrum.

The data table can be downloaded from Google Drive: Sample Data Tables.

Record the wavelength of maximum absorbance. This wavelength is probably not

one of the wavelengths listed in the table above.
