Me and Mathematics

"Doing What You're Talking About": In Dialogue With My Family

by Eden Morris

This project is the final capstone project for my M.A. in Liberal Studies at the Graduate Center. I named my individualized concentration for the program "Humanizing Mathematics", which I have attempted to do. I have created three audio collages, which are made up of my family's voices during recorded conversation about math, teaching/learning, and our imaginings for the betterment of mathematics education. Each audio collage also includes a track of my harp playing, and an environmental recording that I took. These audio collages are accompanied by a whitepaper in which I engage in a philosophically oriented and auto-ethnographic discussion about "Me and Mathematics". Through careful reflection on my conversations with my family members, and additional reflection on my process, I came to my finding: The importance of "doing what you're talking about". My hope is that my project can contribute towards imagining a better mathematics experience for all , while inspiring my readers and listeners to consider how "doing what you're talking about" (and talking about what you're doing) can be applied throughout our own lives.
