In Defense of Spanish Democracy

This series of student-made flyers, pamphlets, and zines were created between 1936 and 1937, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. They served as political propaganda, notices for political guest speakers such as Will Herberg of the Communist Party Opposition, informational aid and a call for the collection of donations and contributions of different forms, for those who fought in the front lines of this war. Some of them relate political events arising in Spain and the way they impact the politics of the United States, while others include drawings of comics, which show the true D.I.Y. (“do it yourself”) spirit of many of these student councils, such as the CCNY Aid Spain Committee and the Student Council. The purpose behind these pamphlets and flyers is to promote democracy and peace as a response against the rise of fascism among CCNY students and professors. This collection was co-curated by Amando Clemente and Melanie Matonte.
