Charting Your First Semester

Advice, Guidance, and Resources from First-years to First-years

Do you need a guide that tells you which courses are the hardest so you can avoid having a rough start? A guide on how to comfort people? Are you tired of emailing people who never respond back and it’s your fifth time asking but you swear this is the last time you just want to know where the cafeteria is?

Well, you’ve come to the right place… well book. A Guide for Incoming Lehman College First Years is a guide made by first year students for first year students. Written in 2024, this book covers a wide range of topics including interactive maps of the campus, college student health guides, tips and advice, guides for classes that are notoriously difficult, all the different health careers offered at Lehman, and walkthroughs that will help you locate important resources. This is a guide on Lehman College that shares tips that will make college life a lot easier. We went through it, so you don’t have to.

So don’t be shy and flip through the guide! You never know; it may hold the answer to what you’ve been pondering about. Plus, it’s a lot faster than waiting for your advisor to respond to that email you sent days ago.

The thumbnail is a graphic illustration of a large calendar with three young women surrounding it. One woman is holding an over-sized pencil as if to write on the calendar and she appears to be standing behind the calendar. The second woman is standing in front of the left side of the calendar and pointing at it. The third woman is seated atop a large sand hourglass and her hand position suggests she is proposing an idea. The calendar is multi-colored and has large check marks on two of the days in the middle.

Welcome!

We made this book to help incoming first-year students. The transition from high school to college is difficult on its own. Well, good thing you’re not alone! There are many resources that can help you make this transition as painless as possible. One of those resources is this book. It was made by first year college students who are going through the challenges you too will face. And so, despite our finals-induced exhaustion, we pulled through and wrote this book. It’s a guide that offers insight into what to expect from college. While writing this, we have poured our own experiences into this guide hoping that our struggles will be of use to someone.

As mentioned, this book is a guide. It will offer advice in a variety of areas. It will also provide resources to help you throughout your academic journey. Some of this advice will help you get through the first year of college, but the resources will last your entire college career. Not only that, but if you're interested in pursuing a career in the medical field then you’re in luck! This guide was written by pre-med and pre-health students. We have sections dedicated to advising first-years on what to expect from pre-med. Not only that but we even included what health careers you might want to look into, just in case you're not too sure on what to pursue.

Divulging what's in this book may take a while, after all, two classes worked on this guide. So, as you can imagine it’s packed full of informative content that comes straight from first-hand experience. If you're ever lost then there’s no need to fear, this guidebook comes with an interactive map of the campus! It will come in handy to avoid getting lost on your first day. We also have college student health guides. College is hard, not only is there a ton of work you have to turn in but now your friends are also feeling the pressure. This guide has you covered when it comes to balancing your personal life and school life. If you, like most, are taking BIO 181 then you will be receiving emails from the school warning you. It’s a tough class especially if you're already struggling with the transition to college. Fear not, we have compiled a study guide just for this course. Trust me, you’ll need it. And how could we forget a new school means new apps that you have to master. CUNYfirst, Navigate, and Blackboard are your new best friends. We have step-by-step walkthroughs for these. If you don’t know how to use these apps or what they are even for then by the end of these walkthroughs, you’ll be a pro. And it wouldn’t be a guide if we didn’t tell you about all the clubs you can join. From an Afro Beats Dance club to a basketball club. Yeah, I can’t give any good examples, there's way too many to choose from. Well luckily for you, and me, we have a guide for clubs. And as an added bonus they are organized by student interest!

There’s way more but for your sake I’ll leave it at this, and our table of contents will fill you in on all the sections I missed. College isn't going to be easy, but we hope this guide will at least tell you what to expect.
