In three seconds
she had tracked a [mountain] blue peak
far beyond the friendly babble
and well-tried arm
that straightened her.
She stood up--rearranged
around her changeless center:
brushing from her mind a diamond phrase
about the hole she’d made.](https://cuny.manifoldapp.org/system/resource/2/f/6/2f64621c-dbc7-4420-a7e7-c11821a33957/attachment/92d34c9e2d0c6fe3069308d8c7b138d5.jpg)

The dinner-dance of the association, held on November 2nd in Leonard’s of Great Neck, was a huge success with close to 300 members and guests attending. Plaques for dedicated service were awarded to former Sgt-at-Arms Bob Rice, 1st V.P. Charles Farkouh, and President Michael Spadafora.
It was reported that Joseph Pomare passed away. May God rest his soul.
Free Brochure on $$ Scams
CSREA Vice-President Richard McCarthy said that CSREA members who don’t want to get caught in a scam and want to be sure that their money is safe can write or call the Institute of Certified Financial Planners for their free brochure that describes many common scams, how to avoid these pitfalls and how to select a qualified financial planner.
The brochure, entitled, “Avoiding Investment and Financial Scams: Seeking Full Disclosure is the key” can be obtained by calling 1-800-282-PLAN or writing to the institute at 10065 East Harvard Avenue., Suite 220, Denver, Co. 80231.
McCarthy said that many retiring employees borrow 75% of their pension monies, so it may be important for them to write for this brochure.
Dep. Mayor’s Son Arrested
CSREA President Charles Drha, a retired detective, said that Deputy Mayor Bill Lynch’s son, William Lynch 3rd, 20, was arrested at 5:15 p.m. on Monday, October 23rd, in the Times Square station at 8th Avenue and 42nd Street on charges of fare beating. He was arrested along with seven or eight other riders at the time.
The son was taken to the headquarters of Transit Police District 1, at Columbus Circle (59th Street), in Manhattan. He was fingerprinted and photographed.
At the time of the arrest, said Drha, his father was reported at a meeting with Mayor Dinkins in City Hall. In September, young Lynch was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct, allegedly for refusing a police officer’s order to move himself from a park bench in Harlem and then getting into an argument with the cop. That arrest was voided by a deputy inspector of the Police Department.
The son is a student at Manhattan Community College.

They have laid you, James,
where you are free
to drink the rain
I, my [undecipherable] their heads are dry;
I drop them to the ground
and water them to life,
to you, James,
bloom and flower
no longer deadly, James,
forever (you).
7:00 a.m.
Blooming, a flower they could not crush, could not outlive.
9:00 a.m.
In this land
where so many hearts
have gone away,
I swear
to keep yours in my central place:
and do.

A BLACK MILITANT POEM SPEAKS
by J. A. Emanuel
I was born militant,
screamed
when the world first [*leave 5 spaces*] touched me,
slapped me into life.
Measles, mumps, and scarlet fever
dug [was like trenches to my bedroom door,]
foxholes near my schoolyard,
[tried an tough tested me at fighting back,]
[blood tested
[while words my father hated]
[toughened my hands]
[to the schoolyard,] to my inkwell,
[sank] dragged me home
to [for] test[s at] my fighting back.
Retilo Remos taught me how to [swear curse
like Mexicans pushed [who had to live] in boxcars homes [across the] across [beyond] the railroad tracks,
while words my father always hated
[toughened my hands, like cracked marbles toughening gripped] toughened my hands
like the grip of cracked marbles.](https://cuny.manifoldapp.org/system/resource/1/2/d/12d187c9-ddb7-4b80-81c7-d912033958f0/attachment/e55e15f9d83bb567633652f3cec5e23d.jpg)

[CROSS-COUNTRY] TRACKS, FOR A [MIDDLE-CLASS GIRL] BOURGEOUIS WOMAN
by J. A. Emanuel
High in [Austrian] alpine snow,
[her awkward] cross-country skis at awkward rest
to imitate the guide [*on a line by itself*]
she looked back suddenly, [felt surprisingly] surprised to feel
the downward mountain pulsing in h er eyes:
“a mystical experience,”
Wordsworth himself had said,
[the] this blank-ribbed surface of her past,
placeless as sky whirled upside down--
only clouds to slow her feet [again],
no gripping path
except the rutted trail behind them
its whiteness rearranged by bluer air.
A trance-like [quiet] quiet
palmed away her friend’s bright [phrase] talk
[left] from space the guide’s new voice [fit perfectly] spreads through
like quick-dry brush brushstrokes
[finishing] re-coloring the portrait she had sat for
all her life:
“Perhaps you’d like,” he said,
“to make tracks of your own.”
The sunshine-frame of it
[beamed out a splendor] braced the instant
[for the instant] needed by her waking skis
to plunge, her willing body following,
her [waking] shining senses leaping downhill[,]
to clinch[ing] the risk, the dare,
exhilaration blinded to the rock that rose
and jerked her headlong underneath the snow--
a [quiet] trap-door disappearance, a [soft] swallowing.
Panic pushed her friend--the guide already there--
to the nothingness above her,
anxiety a shrilling vapor
until a rosy-tasseled cap,](https://cuny.manifoldapp.org/system/resource/b/2/5/b2551129-f51b-43c5-b51c-17fb8102b329/attachment/d82e0734123a482a1701c3d7a3cb90b9.jpg)
