Interviews
In 2019, inspired by a plethora of YouTube videos and works by Lani Milstein and Mililián Galis Riverí, I returned to Santiago after a nineteen-year hiatus to study conga percussion in depth. In June and December of that year I was fortunate to learn from and record the words and music of several talented artists, but the two whose knowledge of the genre's musical trajectory and important innovators impressed me the most were Galis and Lazaro Bandera.
In July 2023 I returned to Santiago and was lucky enough to record and film interviews with two of the city's most highly respected musical elders: Galis (b. 1939) and Berta Armiñan Linares (b. 1943), both of whom had been founding members of Santiago's Conjunto Folklorico de Oriente in 1959 and have had extensive careers as performers, researchers, and teachers.
I created edited versions of many of the interviews in order to feature what I believe to be the more important insights.
All interviewees consented for this footage to be made public.
