Photo Collection
The James A. Emanuel Project’s Photo Collection contains forty-six photographs that show nearly eighty years of intentionally photographed moments but mostly snapshots of Emanuel’s life. The earliest image in this collection is a sharp, professional “Photograph of James A. Emanuel” from about 1922-23—when he couldn’t yet be two-years old. The most recent is the “ Robert Trecoine, Jake Lamar and Godlieve Simons Photo,” a snapshot from 2002 at Robert Tresoine’s home in Paris. Most of this collection are images of Emanuel’s travels and moments with Marie-France Plassard (fourteen photos); writer related scenes—such as his desk, poetry readings, and salons (fourteen photos), and memories from FESTAC ’77, the 1977 Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture held in Lagos, Nigeria (seven photos).
