Full description

Summary: In this 1938 essay (published in The Crisis) Dr. Cooper considered why whites, and even some Blacks, so ardently insist that their cultures and schooling be kept separate. What is the function of a racially segregated social life in a time when Black accomplishments and [skills] are readily acknowledged and praised? Why continue to fight tooth and nail for separation? Why are education and high-culture partitioned with particular intensity?

Description: This PDF is an original copy of three pages from the May, 1938 issue of The Crisis. You'll find 1) the front cover, 2) Dr. Cooper's essay that is formatted into three columns (and since the essay ends at the top of the third column, you'll also see a few Letters from Readers beginning on this page), and 3) a back cover with advertisements. These pages also have a "Moorland-Spingarn Research Center" watermark since that is where the original copies are housed.

Why can't I see the PDF?

Is the Manifold Man on Break or Something?

A reader will only be able to see this document if they download it and open it with an external PDF viewer. Manifold does not support PDF viewing. Why? Because PDF files are often inaccessible and they do not play well with other file formats. Now, I know it may feel hard to stray from the trusty 'ol PDF. They've been the backbone of university life for decades, after all. However, once you get the hang of it, a life without PDFs is a simpler, more fulfilling life.
