Angry Saxons and Negro Education

Full description

Description: This resource is a .jpg file that contains an image of page 2 of the original PDF. Unlike PDF files, image files can be displayed in Manifold. You can even change the image size, personalize a decorative border, add links so the image becomes a button, and more (you can learn more about these possibilities at w3schools.

Unfortunately, the image conversion has not solved the issue of accessibility. If a student uses a screen reader, they either wouldn't be able to access the essay AND/OR they would be in for a fair amount of extra labor in an attempt to extract the text. (Note: screen readers are a common aid for blind/low-vision people, dyslexic people, as well as certain developmentally disabled people)

No matter how beautiful or useful or impactful the image might be, it doesn't do much good if the screen-reading crew can't figure out what it contains. It's best to use images for decoration or re-stated information ONLY. Even decorative images should always have a brief alt-text description to let people know what is depicted in the image. So even with this high quality, zoomable image we have here, we will need some other file type to make this essay accessible. AND if accessibility wasn't exciting enough (it is), we will be able to do all kinds of fun and useful things once we get this essay into a Manifold-friendly format. Let's proceed to TEXT FORMATS.
