VII. Common Hardware Issues

Quick troubleshooting guide for common hardware issues in class or at home.

1. What microphone cable do I need?

Most studio mics use XLR cables.

USB mics use a USB cable, no interface needed.

Lavalier and headset mics may use TRS or mini-XLR, depending on brand.

2. Why does my mic sound weak or distorted?

  • Check for correct phantom power (48V) if it’s a condenser mic.
  • Make sure input gain on the interface isn’t too low or too high.
  • Try another cable or input channel.
  • Check the polar pattern switch (if applicable) isn’t set incorrectly.

3. My mic is not recording. What should I do?

  • Confirm the mic is plugged in and recognized by the interface.
  • Make sure it's assigned to the correct input channel in the DAW.
  • Record-enable the track.
  • Confirm phantom power is ON only if using the Rode condenser mic.
  • Test the mic with another system if unsure.

4. How do I connect amps correctly to avoid grounding issues or static?

  • Use balanced audio cables (XLR or TRS) when possible.
  • Avoid pluging the amp onto a multicontact that is shared with other devices.
  • When possible, plug on a single socket on the wall.
  • Avoid running audio cables parallel to power cables.
  • Avoid shaking or droping the amp as parts may become loose inside the cabinet.
  • Never remove a ground pin from a power cable, this is dangerous.
  • Never connect a 3-prong cable to a 2-prong contact.
