Entry by Sally Saleh: The Duchess of Malfi theater costumes

Full description
The artifact I chose was the costume design for the play the duchess of malfi which we read in the beginning of the semester. The costumes for this production were designed by Malcolm Brown; as shown above. Right off the bat you could tell this production was from past centuries based on the costume design. The play is set in the court of Malfi, Italy, from 1504 to 1510. This being the Jacobean period, and Renaissance attire, sometimes passed down from wealthy patrons, would have been suitable. Because this drama takes place among rich, important individuals from The Royal Court, most female characters would wear long gowns with fancy poofy sleeves and headpieces, while most males would wear form fitting blouses. Men would wear trousers and capes, highly royal members of The Court may wear coats with padded sleeves, and both men and women would be permitted to wear colored attire. Padding would be added to their outfits, wigs would be worn on their heads, and so much make-up would be put on their faces.
