Entry by Eric Carvente: Portrait of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz
Full description
This is a portrait of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz is a playwright. She is also a poet, writer, and composer of the Baroque period. She was born on November 12,1648 in San Miguel Nepantla, Mexico. In the portrait the artist draws her surrounded by several books which could signify that she was very dedicated to writing and is what she enjoyed. The books and her sitting at the desk show that she enjoys writing and could be writing a play. I researched and found out that she is not married and became a nun because she wanted to chase her intellectual interests. That is represented in the holy cross she is holding in her hand. Also represented in her clothing which is that of a religious sister’s clothing. Based on that we can see that Juana is very devoted to God and her religion. In conclusion from this portrait, we can get a sense of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz’s identity which plays a role in the way she writes and what she writes about in her plays.
