Associated with conformity and oppression for the LGBTQ community, sacred spaces still feature prominently in the lives of those marginalized. A student ethnographer tracks sacred spaces around the East Village given that these have nevertheless served as community-building places—as have bars, and other social spaces where people can congregate and feel a sense of belonging.
