South Bronx Sustainability (Case Study)
Full description
This case study provides an analysis that focuses on environmental quality, social equity, and their interrelationships amongst residents living in the South Bronx region of the Bronx, one of five boroughs in New York City (NYC). The study can serve as a module to be used to support a course section focused on environmental policy and is intended for an advanced undergraduate course that focuses on public policy, city/urban politics and policy, and/or environmental policy.
The study introduces students to a range of indicators and concepts related to discussions concerning urban environmental quality and social equity. The analysis includes a variety of publicly available demographic and environmental data to provide comparisons of social and environmental conditions in the South Bronx relative to the Bronx borough and the city of New York, with a focus on access to green space and air quality.
Students are tasked with identifying potential policy solutions for addressing these South Bronx environmental quality challenges.
