Kevin Killian, “On Memory Play” (poetics@, 2012)
Full description
This excerpt from Kevin Killian’s contribution to poetics@ (EPC Digital Library, 2012) offers a first-person account of his experience performing in a San Francisco workshop production of Memory Play at The Lab in 1994. Writing with characteristic humor and insight, Killian reflects on the collaborative, exploratory nature of the rehearsal process, his role as the “Miltonic Humiliator,” and the production’s evolving relationship to the text. The piece provides first-hand documentation of the play’s early performance history, including references to costume design, directorial approaches, cast members, and the involvement of figures such as Kathy Acker.
