Memory Play performance at The Lab (San Francisco, 1993)

Full description

Carla Harryman writes: "The Lab performances of Memory Play are very special to me, because of the particular people involved in the production. Philip Horvitz, the director, was a beloved gay director and actor who died of heart failure in 2005 at the age of 44. John Woodall was a SF sculptor, installation artist, and performance artist. He was a guiding light in the alternative art scene and my interlocutor as I completed the play. He made the set installation and performed as Reptile. Kevin Killian played the small role of Miltonic Humiliator, which was embellished with some of his own writing, as I asked him to add to his part if he wanted to (and of course he did). Nancy McClellan, who performed Fish, is also no longer with us. She was a comedian, artist, and gardener, who was about to become the permanent gardener for the Berkeley Zen Center, a job she kept until she was murdered in 2014 just a block away from the Zendo. Scott Macleod (Pelican) is thankfully still living as is the glorious Michelle Rollman. Scott was a co-founder of The Lab, although he was no longer involved in it institutionally by the time of the performance. He is a remarkable conceptual artist and writer. And Michelle Rollman is a visual artist with theater talent."
