Full description

This plaque, located on the second floor of the North Academic Center on the CCNY campus, commemorates faculty, students and staff who volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War. In particular, it pays homage to the 13 volunteers who lost their lives during the war, including Mendy. It was commissioned in 1980 by a group of alumni. It features a detail from Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” painting which depicts the devastation of the eponymous town by German aviation in 1937. Some of the alumni who participated in the ceremony also contributed to Mendy’s book.
