To the Negro Children of Mount Vernon
(On the Occasion of My School Board Candidacy)

Understand what I have done:
This race was run
With every daughter, every son
Among you. Even when you slept
You took my hand; you kept
And toughened what was left
When midnight and fatigue
And the fog of dim intrigue
Fell like a net. It was a league
Batman and Robin never faced. . .

But when 1 thought of you and traced
The history of your smile, I was embraced
By powers which children grow and shine
And give away like flowers. You sign
"With love" each card. Thank you for mine.
