LOVELOOK BACK

Bubble in you
swells beneath my touch,
like air I rode when but a boy
flying on my horse of painted wooden sticks
gulping wind and jumping continents
aiming bit and bridle at the tops of trees.

Look of you tucked in around your eyes
is mystery of books high on the shelf
my tallest ladder never reached,
is words I wondered wide-eyed in the night
when bedroom forms seemed more than chairs
hung down with blue jeans,
rug curled up by shoes.

Sounds that lap me in curtains of your breathing
bring ocean-distance that my prairie years,
in stretching long ago, found borderland
where thirst and drink where same,
where bloodbeat rhythm urged the way
to walk a corner, linger near a skirt,
speak of graceful hunger.

You are cliff and precipice
to hug my narrow path that swayed
through windy stems and darkened in the sun,
that turned from cave I stored with candy
licked until imagination had undressed the town;
you are meadow too for sinking falls
and softest echo in the feel of grass.

Rise of you in slow-leaving taking of the room
in gleam of breast and shoulder through tiptoe dark
is body-cover for buds of secret talk
I used to bloom in spaces of my mind
where silent girls slow sung their legs
and played their eyes across my brow.

Leave-taking now is tender part of you
I dare not
touch
but with this hand that once waved
to the hills.
