Emanuel's Letter to Ronald Walcott (1976)

c/o AmConGen – Warsaw APO New York, N.Y. 09757 25 January 1976 Mr. Ronald Walcott 1475 Geneva Loop Brooklyn, N.Y. 11239 Dear Mr. Walcott: Actually while I was looking over your two essays (on Hal Bennett and on Ellison, Gordon and Tolson), I received a letter from Dudley Randall indicating his plans for the near future. To keep Broadside Press in such condition that it can “at least break even,” to quote him, he must reduce the number of books to be published. He adds that he, unfortunately, “can’t consider the Tolson book now.” I am sorry to send you this news, but perhaps it will not surprise you. The main fact to be remembered, I believe, is that Dudley Randall’s moves are motivated by his determination to keep Broadside Press free of “outside” influences and thus to preserve its chances for real integrity. I shall personally always encourage him to do just that. Your essays, which I have had to examine rapidly, since it is now examination period at the University of Warsaw, show that you have a solid literary future: you can contribute much to Black criticism, and I am sure that you will. Thanks for your efforts aimed at association with the Broadside Critics Series. Sincerely, James A. Emanuel
