I

Indians, cowboys 
crossed my town with faces brown
like rocks. They were real.

II

Sticks, I called my horse.
I painted him, rode him hard. 
His grave is secret.

III

He took turpentine, 
knife, and pail--"nut the pigs,"
be called it. I learned.

Poem written by Emanuel in 1986/1987, dedicated to Midwestern boys. He draws on Midwestern tropes, specifically the feud between the Native Americans (referred to as “indians” in his poem) and the cowboys.
