Draft, Women Laughing

Paris, 18 Aug., 1984. Got out of bed to begin this poem, 11:14 p.m—11:21

WOMEN LAUGHING or FRAGMENT OF A PARTY

From my thin bed
on the fourth floor
I hear women laughing
down in the courtyard.

Their laughter turns the warm cobblestones
into water.
Without leaving my bed
I walk on it, not sinking,
going down to them, strangers.
Yet, they know me,
take my hand,
and keep on laughing.

On any summer night
it is lovely
to hear women laughing.
