Professor Saul N. Brody
Chairman, Dept. of English
The City College
Convent Ave. at 138th Street
New York, N.Y. 10031

Dear Saul,

Thanks for your letter of the 10th
which arrived only yesterday because of its
having been forwarded from Toulouse (although
I'm teaching at the University of Toulouse, I
now live in Paris--commuting irregularly).

The idea of applying for an extension of
my leave appeals to be strongly, and staying
abroad an extra year would immeasurably serve
my plans for further writing. However, I have
been assuming that I had to return to duty at
CCNY in September 1981--if one has to do any-
thing--and have been expecting to receive the
usual February departmental memo regarding
fall courses desired. Please tell Dean Shevlin
of my temptation, which continues as of this
moment. (And if the English Department could
profit in the slightest from another year of my
absence, you can electrify my dormant hopes by
encouraging me to make a late application for
that extension.)

However, since I am at least partially resigned
to my New York fate, I'll try to be realistic by
now asking you to have someone send me (by air
mail) a CCNY bulletin or excerpts from it, as
well as whatever forms I should complete for
getting my fall teaching schedule. As for a book
list, I would need suggestions for texts, and
departmental course descriptions would help, In
getting together these things to send me, the
person responsible should consider me as an alien
who remembers little of procedures.

After recovering from my operation last sum-
mer, I worked extremely hard on that autobiography
for Duke University's historical center
(covering only my life as a poet abroad). I fin-
ished it on 7 February: 415 pages combining travel-
ogue, novel (sometimes Gothic), literary commen-
tary, and wide revelations of "the poetic process."
Have written some poetry too, since my 1980 vol-
ume, with more in the offing, I hope. Say hello to
my cell mate Dave, to the oldtimers, and to the
secretarial staff.
    Warm regards,
       James A. Emanuel
