Now that I have returned toNew York for work (I am a full professor in the Depart-ment of English at the City College of New York), I am ready to assemble my third volume of poetry. If you are interested in looking at my work, youmight let me know which of the following two volumes-to-be you would prefer to see. 1. A volume already assembled, except for the addition of five poems that I wrote in France and Holland this summer. Entitled Black Tender, it will extend to about 95 pages in typescript when the new poems are added. It is comprised of the most popular poems from my The Treehouse and Other Poems (1968) and Panther Man (1970), plus new, mostly unpublished, poems written since 1970. 2. A volume that could be assembled, limited to most of my post-1970 poems, about 55 pages long. The enclosed publicity sheet will give you an idea ofthe work that I have done in poetry (I use it sometimes for my readings). I am also enclosing a postal card,self-addressed, that might save you time in replying. Ishould add, in case you do wish to see one of the volumes, that no one but me needs to give permission to reprint thealready-published works in the first-described volume. Sincerely yours, James A.
