Dear Naomi,

The ten copies of A Chisel in the Dark just reached
me; and before I take my other arm out of my jacket, I
want to thank you and the Lotus Press staff for acting so
promptly on my letter of 21 January. Thanks too for the
neatly made—up lists of books for sale, which I will use
at my reading day after tomorrow; and I will make enough
photocopies to serve for my trip to Austrian cities in
late April.

Yesterday I participated, with Michel Fabre (at his
place), Daniel Maximin (a literary scholar from Guadeloupe)
and Micheline Hoffmann (who knows Mercer Cook and others)
in a taping session for "France Culture's" radio show
called "Antipodes," evidently. It will be aired on 20 Febru—
ary under the subtitle "Les Noirs—Amèricains en France"--
to publicize, in part, Michel's just—out book La Rive Noire:
De Harlem à la Seine, about Black writers in Paris particu—
larly, but in other parts of France also. The last chapter
caused me to pull out three books on French, for it is en—
titled "De Toulouse a Tombouctou: James Emanuel, Melvin Dixon,
Ted Joans." At the taping, when it came my turn to sit before
the microphone and answer questions, I was sure that the ques—
tions would be in English. imagine how my brain circuits
raced when I suddenly found myself listening to French, know—
ing that I had to reply--and expound--in French. Now I know
that I must, or at least should, try to spend more time on
those irregular verbs. One part of the book by Michel is not
in French: the sixteen pages of photos.

I'm still writing poetry, of course: just finished--I
think--the latest one yesterday, another two—page effort. And
am recovering from a cold I caught in Hamburg, Germany. My
social life is deliberately slow--to save time for poetry--but
my latest friend is a former dancer with the Folies Bergère, so
the Lord is still my Shepherd.

Don't; give it a second thought if you you're too busy to write--
but take care of yourself (and hello to Leonard).

    Warm regards,
      Jim
