Dear Professor Fabré

Picking up my mail yesterday, I found your letter which
told me of the action of the Association Française d'Etudes
Américaines in appointing me the coordinator for papers on the
racial revolution in the United States to be presented at the
March Congress of that organization. Since I have not received
the AFEA report that apparently gives some details about the
event, perhaps you could have one mailed to me at my address in
Seyssins. (Perhaps you would be kind enough to include a reprint
of some work of yours on Richard Wright or on Afro-American liter-
ature, if you have something immediately handy).

Having never acted as a coordinator before, and being a non-
joiner myself, I can only tentatively accept the appointment, which
does, of course, sound like an interesting one. It occurs to me
that, upon final acceptance of such a task, I should want to correspond
with each person who is deliver a paper on the subject, and to
assume other tasks without which I could not perform to my own satis-
faction. And I assume that the affair would be a rather informal one.
So, I shall look forward to learning more about this interesting
meeting. Are literary subjects to be included? (I am generally
more drawn to the literary than to the confused and intrigue-ridden
social activities of these particular years in our strange history.)

I am glad that you found DARK SYMPHONY attractive; I look forward
to discovering reviews of it. Did you see my LANGSTON HUGHES (Twayne,
1967) and my THE TREEHOUSE AND OTHER POEMS (Broadside Press, Detroit,
1968)? As you say, it would be pleasant if you and Theodore Gross and
I could get together in Paris. In the meantime, I look forward to
hearing more from you regarding your organization's spring meeting.

      Sincerely,

      James A. Emanuel
