Mr. Hoyt W. Fuller
Managing Editor, NEGRO DIGEST
1820 S. Michigan Avenue
Chicago, Illinois 60616 U.S.A.

Dear Fuller:

Thanks for your prompt action in having copies of NEGRO
DIGEST sent to me in response to my letter of 18 January. I am
enclosing a check for six dollars, based on the following assumed
breakdown:

    $ .00 Sept.-Oct. issue, 1 contributor's copy
      .00 November issue, 1 contributor's copy
      .50 December issue, 1 contributor's copy
      1 copy on special request
     1.00 January issue, 2 copies on special request
     4.50 airmail postage for all copies combined
    $6.00 TOTAL

 It occurs to me that I should clarify a line in my letter of
18 January: I referred to a phrase on page 52 of the January DIGEST
reading "...the CIA poisoned Richard Wright..." I followed that
quote with my own query "Do you think enough of us are awake?" My
clarification is that I can easily believe that charge, by Nikki Gio-
vanni in this instance. My own annoyances in France, I am sorry to
say, have come almost entirely from my few associations with Ameri-
cans, so I try to avoid them. I have found them to be dangerous in
all senses of the word.

 Let me know if you find useable either of my two poems that Dudley
Randall sent to you recently. And if you think the Johnson Publishing
Company would risk handling a 75-page volume of my poetry--it was reluc-
tant to take a chance about two years ago--I'd like to know, for I'll
very soon start querying publishers. Thanks again for the DIGEST copies;
they help bring me up to date in a way that no other publication does.

      Cordially,

       James A. Emanuel

P.S. Have you seen Addison
  Gayle's book of essays yet?
