Fuller Managing Director NEGRO DIGEST 1820 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60615 Dear Mr. Fuller: Responding to your letter of the 23d, I can say that I shall be happy to select some part of my forthcoming book for you to reprint in the special Poetry Issue, to be dedicated to Langston Hughes. I was, of course, numbed by the occasion of his death; but it was good to be able to know that Langston had been able to read my manuscript as well as the galley proofs. So he was very familiar with it. He told me that "This will make a beautiful book"; let us how that he was not mistaken, and that it will do at least some justice to his accomplishments. I telephoned my publisher, who liked your suggestion; he further indicated that you might write to him regarding arrange- ments for the use of the material. When the time comes, then, you can write to Mr. Jacob Steinberg, Managing Editor, Twayne, Publishers, Inc., 31 Unition Square West, New York, N.Y. 10003. In the meantime, I shall select something that I think you would like, or find some means for you to read several portions from which you can select what you prefer. Being now in the midst of grading final examination papers, I must wait several days before carrying out this promise.
