Letter from Paule Marshall

Dear James Emanuel -

The last time we talked - a few years
ago - you were seriously considering moving
to Paris for good. And you have done just
that, according to Shay Youngblood, the writer,
who was kind enough to give me your
address.
You took off for the City of Lights and I
relocated to the Capital of the Confederacy,
Richmond VA, where I've been living, teaching
and writing for the last seven years. Need-
less to say, I'd gladly exchange places
with you.
I'll be in Paris for a month beginning
on January 15th to do research on a travel article
for the NY Times, as well as to attend Michel's
conference in February. The article the Times has
asked me to do will focus on the African-Am.
artistic community in Paris today, specifically
the clubs, cafes, bistros, and the like that are the
favorite haunts of the present generation of Black
expatriates. It would be wonderful to talk
with an established fact like yourself, to get
a sense of the special meaning Paris holds for
you. Besides, it would be good just to catch
up on all your news!
I'll you once I arrive and hope
that you will perhaps have time for lunch,
dinner or just for a drink.

   All the best,
   Paule Marshall
