Dear Dr. Emanuel:

I am sorry to have taken so long to write concerning the publication
of Blackman Abroad: The Toulouse Poems, but I wanted to allow myself
time to go through the manuscript again with more than a cursory
glance. I have reread it carefully now and am favorably impressed.

I am aware, however, as you probably are, that this collection will
have a quite limited appeal. At the same time, it is a collection
which ought to be published, and I am committed to the publication
of poetry by black authors with considerable literary merit regard-
less of popular appeal. I would therefore be pleased to publish
this work.

Three books a year have been as many as we have been able to handle
in the past, and we are already committed for 1978. The monetary
outlay has been part of the consideration; the time involved has
also been important. So far we have stayed away from financial con-
tributions by the authors, as we have not wished to establish the
press on a subsidy basis. We could make a definite commitment for
1979, but since you are anxious to have the work published before
that time, we will be willing to discuss further your offer to co-
invest. (This earlier publication possibility is based largely on
the impression that we see very little in your manuscript that we
would wish to alter. There would be very little "nit-picking" we
would wish to do, reducing the time usually involved in the editing
process.)

It would be helpful at this point if you could provide some information
regarding your previous sales. (I hesitate to question Dudley on this
point considering his present state of mind, and unfortunately, the
Alexander Crummell Center which took over Broadside Press seems to be
in a state of general confusion, and I cannot expect to get any infor-
mation there.) This information will be helpful in determining how
large a printing we should anticipate. Once we know that, we can
begin to estimate costs.
