Angola State Farms in the Early Twentieth Century.
Full description
Former Confederate Major Samuel L. James purchased Angola plantation in 1880, where he supplied labor through a convict leasing system. When convict leasing was banned in the State of Louisiana, the State purchased Angola and took over control from James. The prisoners continued to work the land.
