2. A Recruitment Flyer for the Striking Workers' Cause

Below is a flyer made by the striking workers to recruit support from the community. It includes their explanation how the strike and firings progressed. The back of the flyer also includes the signed promises made by the city.

SANITATION WORKERS STRIKE FLYER

THE TRUTH ABOUT SANITATION WORKERS PLIGHT!

THEY FAILED TO DO THIS:

1.Failed to place the men under Civil Service.

2.Failed to permanently remove Duncan from the yard.

3.Some workers were fired without a hearing.

4.Failed to pay workers for actual hours worked.

THE CITY DID DO THIS:

1.Fired 140 workers without a hearing.

2.Although they did not and could not pay the workers for actual hours worked during the past 40 days, it took the City less than 48 hours to determine the exact amount of compensation the workers were entitled once they were fired.

3.They passed an ordinance placing workers under civil service, but the Civil Service Commission refused to act on it when first presented to them on June 20. WHY?

4.The City Council released a statement to the Press on June 5 and against on July 10 that the workers were under Civil Service while the Civil Service Commission did not approve the ordinance until July 11, after the workers had already walked off the job. Why did they misrepresent the facts to the public? – Why the contradictions?

AS PROMISED, THE WORKERS DID THIS:

1.Returned to work on June 4 and each day thereafter until they found out the City had not kept their promises.

2.Agreed to return to work when they were advised they were placed under Civil Service.

3.Returned to work on Saturday, July 12, but were refused the right to work.

NOW YOU HAVE THE FACTS!

YOU BE THE JUDGE.

SUPPORT A JUST CAUSE.
