3. Donation Receipts

Throughout the campaign, the striking workers received support from labor unions, civil rights organizations, and churches, but city officials played hardball. In addition to being fired, they were told that even if they returned to work, they would do so having lost any accrued seniority or experience pay.


Among those who helped gather funds and food for the sanitation workers was the American GI Forum. Below are receipts of their efforts, which include donations from, among many others, Hector P. Garcia, the GI Forum chapter of Edroy (23 miles Northwest of Corpus Christi), and a GI Forum women’s auxiliary (for reference, $1 in 1969 is roughly equivalent to $9 in 2024).
