About this Edition
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. The text is prepared based the texts first publication in The Massachusetts Magazine, where the essay was spread over two issues. Formatting has been generally retained, with the significant exception of converting the text to a single column format for screen and ereaders. While spelling has generally been retained, certain modernizations have been silently made, such as the substitution of the modern “s” for the printer’s long “s.” Italics and capitals have been left intact.
