SEAN M. KENNEDY | Elegant Feelings: The Rhinoceros/Yellow Edition

Elegant Feelings: The Rhinoceros/Yellow Edition
No. 5 Date: 24 Oct. 2015

I was there until 5 a.m., and now I’m going back and it’s
1 p.m. Time slowed but actually sped up. It’d been 11
p.m. and then it was 5 a.m. and I was walking down 5th
Ave. slowly checking things on the phone—that is, my
phone—still in manic mode, alcohol not coursing through
my veins—that’s a cliché—, and one I’ve used before,
like cobbling together a living, another cliché I studiously
avoid—is cobbling the professor that’s the subject of that
sentence or line? I have a few pairs of shoes that need to
be, er, cobbled. How would my students grade the
grammar in this—what? Missive? Hillary
Clinton, whilst persecuted by the vast
white-ring conspiracy—white-ring! A fantasy
detour?
Purity Ring the band? White
supremacy—pause— it’s everywhere. Right-wing
whitos—not
pinkos, like my grandfather called me as
a child—when I was a child—he didn’t
know how dead-on he was, down to the
color. Don’t keep a journal if you want to
be in politics—that’s the ticket. I don’t
want to be a politician but I am in politics.
The dialectic between institutional power,
variously situated and expressed, and
people power, that cute phrase that means
the
world actually. We are the people we’ve been waiting
for. But we’re not waiting—we’re moving on.
