This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. The text is prepared based the texts first publication in The Massachusetts Magazine, where the essay was spread over two issues. Formatting has been generally retained, with the significant exception of converting the text to a single column format for screen and ereaders. While spelling has generally been retained, certain modernizations have been silently made, such as the substitution of the modern "s" for the printer's long "s." Italics and capitals have been left intact.

Jason Nielsen is a doctoral candidate in English and the Program Coordinator for the Digital Humanities MA Program and the Data Analysis and Visualization MS Program at the Graduate Center, CUNY. He is also an adjunct instructor at Queens College where he primarily teaches courses in college writing, early American literature, and American Studies, especially for non-majors. His recent essay, “OER, Anthologies, and Open Pedagogy in Early American Literature,” was published in Building Open Infrastructure at CUNY on Manifold.
