CONCEPT FOCUS: ETHICS

Suzanne Kite (Oglála Lakȟóta) & Alisha B. Wormsley

We see ethics as emergent from our locations. Our creation is only possible through collaboration with non-human beings on Earth and in the cosmos as we dream between stars and stones. Kite & Wormsley, Cosmologyscape (2024)

Suzanne Kite is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. She was raised in Southern California. She investigates contemporary Lakota ontologies (ways of being) through research-creation, computational media, and performance, often working in collaboration with family and community members.

Alisha B. Wormsley is founder of the arts collective Sibyls Shrine and the project There Are Black People In The Future. Both initiatives focus on the redistribution of resources, and reimagination and rematriation of Black futures.

Kite and Wormsley created the project Cosmologyscape (2024) through the Black and Indigenous Dreaming Workshops that they led together.

Activity

Visit the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s official website.

  • How does this sovereign governmental entity describe itself geographically and historically?
  • Kite and Alisha B. Wormsley define themselves through relations -- Wormsley through maternal lines in her family and Kite through kin. How would you introduce yourself?
Visit the Sibyl's Shrine official website.
  • What does Sibyl's Shrine do and what is Alisha B. Wormsley's involvement in it?
  • What kind of collective might you be interested in creating to provide mutual support among artists or researchers who share your values and responsibilities?

Question

Find a dictionary definition of ‘ethics’. How does this definition from Merriam-Webster differ from how Kite & Wormsley say they "see 'ethics'"?

Reflection

Explain the quote from Kite & Wormsley that introduces this section at the top of the page. Can you give examples that support their statement?

Cosmologyscape (2024) is a public art project by Kite and Alisha B Wormsley commissioned by CREATIVE TIME. The quotation at the top of the page comes from the video that introduces the project 'dream site'. The banner was created to introduce the website.
