The Research and Development of a Malawian Early Childhood Development Center
Michelle Pearson (Texas Tech University)
Malawi, a country located in southeast Africa, is one of the least-developed countries in the world and has a 50% dropout rate of students in the primary school system. The current schools are typically purely utilitarian and often struggle to provide basic necessities such as furniture or electricity. The Grace Center is a school and orphanage that educates approximately 750 children. However, the existing facility cannot accommodate the educational needs of students. The purpose of this study was to research and design an Early Childhood Development Center, with a particular emphasis on improved learning, understanding of the culture, and the utilization of sustainable materials.
This research study utilized an exploratory, qualitative analysis. A multidisciplinary team of researchers, with backgrounds in interior design, architecture, human-development and family studies and landscape architecture, firstly worked to gain an understanding of the Malawian culture, daily activities at The Grace Center, and the programmatic needs of the facility. Several site visits and interviews were conducted to build a strong foundational understanding of the design challenges and opportunities. Throughout the exploratory research, three main areas of focus emerged: 1. a dining facility, 2. a preschool, and 3. incorporation of play areas. Based on the findings, preliminary drawings and design solutions for the project were developed.
The findings of this study provide insight to a vibrant culture that has a great need for improvements to the built environment and quality of education. Key programmatic goals were identified with the intention of guiding future structures and research projects. In addition, the researchers found innovative ways to utilize local materials and sustainable practices. The impact of the research holds the potential to improve the experiences, learning environments and quality of life of the students, teachers and members of the community. Based on the research, findings and design solution, construction documents are in the process of being finalized and external funding has been pledged toward the project.
