About This Collection
This collection gathers five study guides developed alongside The Making of Race. They address the how of the project rather than the what: how to read scholarly texts and primary sources, how to capture your thinking in notes and turn those notes into drafts, how to write short analytical pieces on a regular rhythm, and how to present a reading and facilitate the conversation that follows.
The guides share a stance: methods to try, not steps to follow. Each offers strategies to test, keep, adapt, or drop, on the premise that part of the project is learning how you learn. Every guide closes with a short section of that name, prompting readers to notice which methods actually serve them.
Each guide is written for three overlapping audiences: students reading these materials in a course, self-directed learners working through the modules independently, and reading groups — including Manifold Reading Groups. Where the platform itself helps, the guides say so: Manifold's highlighting and annotation tools appear where they fit the practice.
The five guides form an arc from reading to writing to speaking, and they reference one another along the way. But like the materials they support, each stands alone — start wherever the need is.
The Collection
Strategies for Reading These Materials.
Strategies for processing, analyzing, and engaging with scholarly texts — book chapters, journal articles, and beyond. Covers surveying structure, the three-pass method, annotation (including Manifold's tools), common challenges, and pacing, with triage guidance for when time runs short.
Working with Archives, Documents, and Historical Materials.
A set of moves for sources that don't explain themselves: census schedules, maps, court opinions, photographs. Covers sourcing, observing before interpreting, reading for silences, handling historical language deliberately, and treating documents as arguments — the craft behind the project's case studies.
Note-Taking as a Bridge Between Reading and Writing.
How to capture thinking while reading and write with those notes, so drafts begin from material you already have. Covers capture tools from margins to voice memos, what to write down, harvesting notes before a writing session, and five moves for drafting from them.
A Guide and Sample Rubric.
How to write short, regular analytical pieces — discussion posts in a course, learning journal entries for independent readers, or annotations in a reading group. Covers the form, analysis over summary, a sample post structure, and a pass/fail rubric with examples.
Presenting Readings and Facilitating Conversation.
How to prepare a presentation on one reading and facilitate the conversation that follows: six presentation components, facilitation tips, and a preparation checklist. Works in classrooms, reading groups, and book clubs alike.
Using the Guides
The guides need not be read in order or all at once. A natural sequence follows the work itself: reading strategies first, primary sources when the archives appear, notes and drafts when writing begins, posts and journals as the regular practice, and co-leading when it is time to speak. They are meant to be returned to — references rather than one-time reads.
