Purpose of Learning About Controlling Images
Who Needs to Know About Controlling Images?
Everyone, really. But, especially, Black women. When thinking about Black women, historically, socially, politically, and even economically, you start to wonder, how hard it must be to navigate a society that propagates how the rest of the nation views you as both Black and a woman.
Why Is This Important?
It’s important because Black women have been portrayed as lesser than that of their White counterparts for too long. The narrative has always been that Black women aren’t as important or necessary. This attitude has not only been the opinion of White people historically, but now that attitude has managed to make its way into the Black community as well. [Black community in this frame, is referring to the Black men who, like in so many other racial and cultural groups, are the dominant gender]. Malcolm X in his “Who Taught You to Hate Yourself” speech that he delivered on May 5th,1962 in Los Angeles, CA., once said these words:
“The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman…the most unprotected person in America is the Black woman…the most neglected person in America is the Black woman…”
The Black woman is the most disregarded woman in America. Through learning about these controlling images, we will understand why.
