National Association of Social Workers

Professional organizations have many resources that one can access by being a member. Some organizations do have subscription fees, and others do not. Nevertheless, as a novel worker, it is vital to build up our knowledge of the field we will soon work in and continue expanding and developing our skills to better our clients. The National Association of Social Workers website is filled with valuable things such as the latest news within the field, academic journals, a plethora of contact information of other organizations, and so much more insight into whatever one wishes to pursue to understand more. I have found that having access to this organization enhances what is being taught in some of my other courses and sometimes fills the gaps. I have clients that have a psychological diagnosis that impede them from communicating conventionally.

There are short articles in the NASW that report on techniques to manage the uncertainty of challenging clients with a history of mental illness. Membership on a resume indicates an intrigue and desire to be a 9-5 social worker simply. Instead, those looking through one's resumes get the impression that there is an interest in knowing more of what social workers do and implementing new knowledge into the work we do every day. The NASW gives the worker the chance to connect with other professionals in the field. Needless to say, being a member of the National Association of Social Workers has afforded me with opportunities to tap into new knowledge and even given me an idea of the kind of career I hope to end up taking when one begins a new career at times you do not have the slightest clue of what being a specific kind of social worker means or its requirements in terms of degree and licensing/ certifications. There are blogs within the organization's website that allow members or nonmembers to virtually interact with each other and give each other feedback and advice on things related to social work.

International Federation of Social Workers

Professional Organization: I have selected the International Federation of Social Workers as the professional organization that I would like to join because when I decided to study to become a social worker, I wanted to be able to help people in my native country and others as well. The organization and its members seek "social justice, human rights and inclusive, sustainable social development through the promotion of social work best practice and engagement in international cooperation." By joining the IFSW, I will have the opportunity to connect with social workers in other countries and open my non-for-profit organization that could benefit low-income families, parents with special needs children.

The American Clinical Social Work Association (ACSWA)

I also chose the American Clinical Social Work Association (ACSWA) professional organization. https://acswa.org/ "The Center for Clinical Social Work (CCSW) operates the American Clinical Social Work Association (ACSWA), the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (ABE), and EPICCC (social worker student community)." https://acswa.org/ Their "mission is to promote clinical social work as a central health profession based on bio-psycho-social competencies, values, and methods that result in superior behavioral healthcare." https://acswa.org/ I chose the American Clinical Social Work Association because this organization offers many online resources. It serves as a place for social work students and professionals to connect to share ideas. It allows them to network with each other. In addition, this organization's website also posts recent trends in the clinical social work industry and posts relevant news stories. I want to become a clinical social worker, which can be a valuable social work resource that I can look at. It can help me network with other social students and social work professionals.

The National Association of Black Social Workers

The National Association of Black Social Workers is an organization that promotes social justice and human development within the black community. As an African-American female, I have a front seat to the disparities in healthcare, education, economic mobility, housing,

Nutrition, air quality, policing, and lack of resources exist in underserved communities. The NABSW mission of empowering and advocating for people of African ancestry aligns with my desire to see those individuals in African-American communities thrive.

I chose the National Association of Black Social Workers.

The NABSW represents African-American professionals and students. The organization promotes social justice and human development within the black community.

This organization captured my interest because it directly affects the black community. One of the issues that are dear to me is healthcare disparity in the United States. This organization has as one of its many committees a Health and wellness committee that initiates and participates in policy discussions that impact African Americans; while doing research and critically analyzing information that supports the health of African Americans.

The School of Social Work Association of America

The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) was established to promote social work schools of social work. It is the only national organization of its kind. Their mission is to support, connect and equip school social workers to provide evidence-informed services. As a parent, I am aware of some children's struggles daily. Unfortunately, many go without professional help because there are no social workers in their schools. This organization's vision to equip every school with a social worker is near and dear to my heart. If we can reach at least one child in every school in America, we can change the world.

Office of Addiction Services and Support

I chose the Office of Addiction Services and Support because it provides all the services and support for those in need of recovery and their families. It is a problem that has affected my family on many personal levels. My family suffered feelings of despair and helplessness. Our experience has driven me to provide the support I was not afforded.

The Office of Addiction Services and Support (OASAS) provides several programs to meet the needs of New Yorkers living with addiction. Under the current leadership of Commissioner Arlene Gonzalez-Sanchez, MS, LMSW, certified providers offer clients and families support through a "comprehensive, patient-centered and family-focused system."

OASAS centers promote recovery through skill-building, recreation, employment readiness, and support of peers. There is 24/7 availability from the Open Access Centers allowing for immediate assessments and referrals to treatment any time of day or night, as well as to medications. A mobile unit provides clinical services directly to those in need through treatment rooms and telemedicine. Clubhouses are outlets available to youths 12-17 and young adults 18-21. They provide peer-driven support in a non-clinical environment to assist progress in recovery. In addition, OASAS administers the credentialing of alcoholism and substance abuse counselors and prevention practitioners, and prevention specialists.

CICATELLI ASSOCIATES INC. 505 EIGHTH AVENUE, SUITE 1900 NEW YORK, NY 10018 PHONE: 212.594.7741 FAX: 212.629.3321; https://www.caiglobal.org/

The following agency helps assist the Social Service worker with an opportunity to be trained in the areas of:

  • Substance Use

  • Behavioral Health

  • Clinical Training—Infectious Disease

  • Tobacco Cessation

Similar to those mentioned above, a pioneer in training and equipping the social service worker to the next agency I highly recommend:

National Development Research Institutes (NDRI) USA; 71 West 23rd Street; 4th Floor; New York; NY 10010; http://www.ndri-usa.org/about-us.html

  • Substance Use Education

  • Harm Reduction

  • Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus

  • Hepatitis (A-G) Virus

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections

  • Theory & Practice of Motivational Interviewing

  • Naloxone (Narcan) education and access

A grassroots agency that I regularly have referred clients to but is essential for any Social Worker's contact list is called:

Exodus Transitional Community; 2271 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10035; https://www.etcny.org/

They cover a myriad of services for those of the formerly incarcerated community. Exodus Transitional Community serves breakfast and lunch at the agency, but now with the recent pandemic of COVID 19, they are providing bagged carry meals for their participants.

The last and final organization that I would like to highlight is, in my opinion, one of the most versatile agencies in New York City.

Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/index.page

It is an agency that covers various services, training, and possible future employment opportunities. All who are committed to the social services field should be connected to someone working for this agency.

Clinical Social Work Association

A professional organization I find interesting for help is the Clinical Social Work Association. It provides a professional organization for clinical social workers. They have talented professional development resources for social workers and the public. They have a jobs board and licensing support. They also have therapist finders for those in need of support/help. I think this is a great website for any future social work students interested in obtaining their master in social work and gaining their license to be a clinical social worker; it helps guide you with the information you may need. The Society for Social Work Leadership in Healthcare (SSWLHC)

The organization that I have selected is The Society for Social Work Leadership in Healthcare (SSWLHC) because its mission is to empower members by providing social workers with access to evidence-based standards of practice, enhance partnerships and collaborations, provide support and education for direct care social workers, advocacy to inform local and national social policy and education for and connection with emerging and established leaders. The Society for Social Workers in the Healthcare Field is dedicated to social workers in the healthcare field and provides continuing education resources, networking opportunities, and member discounts.

While viewing their website, I noticed that the organization focuses on providing childcare, domestic care, and elder care. I have a particular interest in the elder care services that they provide because the aging population has a growing number of problems regarding elder abuse and neglect. The SSWLHC teaches social workers the indicators and signs, and symptoms for identifying elder abuse, how to ask specific, clear, and non-judgmental questions in a private setting, and the procedures and responsibilities of social workers in providing care for seniors.

I am interested in the continuing education that they offer social workers in healthcare to remain fluent with new policies and procedures and competent in providing effective elder care, childcare, and domestic care. This would provide an opportunity for social workers to network in their field that could extend beyond the clinical/medical setting so that social workers can develop partnerships with other organizations that can have the ability to offer connections to care once they are released from the healthcare setting. The Society for Social Work Leadership in Healthcare is a well-balanced and versatile organization that promotes member benefits, improved communication and education for its members, and additional resources to help social workers improve and progress in the social work profession.
