Acknowledgements

It is due to John Woodall’s encouragement that Memory Play has already seen one complete production. I’d also like to acknowledge Gallerie Articule in Montreal for sponsoring a playwrights reading of the complete text on April 1, 1993 and Gail Scott and Jean Luc Roberge for their assistance and support of the presentation in Montreal. Thanks to Naropa Institute in Boulder for occasioning an informal reading of the complete work with Ann Waldman, Anselm Hollo, Lee Ann Brown, Jack Collom, and myself in July 1993. I have been especially fortunate to test the first act in readings for audiences at Submit Theater in San Francisco, Geoff Young’s house in Great Barrington, New York, and the Ear Inn in New York City. My deepest gratitude and appreciation goes to Philip Horvitz for directing the first production of Memory Play, John Woodall for scenic design and his performance of Reptile, and the rest of the cast: Kevin Killian (Miltonic Humiliator), Scott MacLeod (Pelican), Nancy McClellan (Fish), Michelle Rollman (Child) and Wayne Smith (Instruction). Thanks to the LAB in San Francisco for presenting the complete performance May 20-22, 1994. And very special thanks to Asa Watten, to whom this play is dedicated, for his participation, observations and advice; to Barrett Watten for his comments and support; to my parents for their help; and the Fund for Poetry whose support provided me the time to complete this text. Finally, a special thanks to Jerry Estrin, in spirit, for his generous reading of and response to this work.
