I invite scholars, educators, and enthusiasts engaged in exploring the Italian American experience to contribute to the Italian American Studies Open Syllabus. If you have expertise in areas not yet covered or are conducting research that aligns with the project’s aims, I would be eager to receive your contributions. Please reach out to the editor, Stefano Morello, at veritas44@gmail.com with your proposals.

I am particularly interested in expanding the syllabus to include topics such as Aesthetics, Conservatism, Consumerism, Crafts, Domesticity, Education, Environment, Ethnicity, Family, Gender, Identity, Literature, Politics, Popular Culture, Prejudice, Religion, Return, Sexuality, South, Sport, Theater, West, among others. However, I am open to exploring additional keywords that enrich the understanding of the Italian American experience.

Submission Guidelines

  • Curatorial Statement: Please begin with an introductory statement that explains your topic, providing essential background information and guiding readers through the resources you've compiled. Aim for a length of 500-1000 words, keeping the language accessible for a broad audience, including high school and college students, teachers, and autodidacts. Please use this layout to ensure consistency.
  • Tone and Language: The tone should be approachable, tailored to non-academic readers. The goal is to offer insightful overviews that spark interest and understanding in a diverse audience.
  • Relational Engagement: I encourage contributors to draw connections between the Italian American experience and broader subjects within the Italian diaspora and US cultural studies, promoting a broader view of the topic.
  • Resource Selection: Your resources should include 10 to 25 items, formatted according to The Chicago Manual of Style. A mix of academic and non-academic texts, fiction and non-fiction, historical documents, films, music, digital archives, and multimedia like YouTube videos are all welcome.
  • Multimedia and Educational Materials: Inclusion of syllabi, OERs, video excerpts, lesson plans, or activities—particularly those suitable for asynchronous teaching—is encouraged. For multimedia submissions, use the provided Dropbox Request link or contact Stefano Morello for alternative arrangements.
  • Review Process: All submissions will be subject to a review for academic integrity and a copy-editing process to ensure accessibility and uniformity. Expect feedback or requests for revisions within a month of your submission.
